Masterdata — the GS1 Web Vocabulary

The GS1 Web Vocabulary is the upstream, third-party vocabulary the OpenEPCIS masterdata engine models against. Products, Places, and Organizations in the resolver and in Digital Data Management are GS1 classes first; the regulation extensions only add the properties GS1 does not yet define.

This is not an EPCIS extension

The vocabularies under Extensions (Battery, Textile, EUDR, …) are OpenEPCIS-authored and extend EPCIS/DPP for a specific regulation. The GS1 Web Vocabulary is different in kind: it is the upstream vocabulary the masterdata engine builds on. It is published here because we vendor a pinned snapshot and generate bare-term aliases from it — but it belongs to the masterdata engine, not to the extension catalogue.

What the masterdata engine models from GS1

The engine resolves and serves master data as GS1 Web Vocabulary types.

gs1:Product

and its subclasses. GS1 models trade items across many product classes, not a single Product type. A resolver product record is a gs1:Product (optionally further typed by an extension class such as eubat:Battery) carrying gs1:gtin, gs1:productName, gs1:brand, weights, dimensions, and packaging.

gs1:Place

identified by a GLN (gs1:globalLocationNumber). Used for manufacturing places and facilities referenced from a product's master data.

gs1:Organization

also GLN-identified. Used for the manufacturer, economic operator, and other parties associated with a product.

The EN 18223 Digital Product Passport derivation reads exactly these GS1-typed records and projects them to the passport.

Served master-data fields

The 139 flat field names the Digital Link resolver exposes for Product, Place, and Organization master data, each with its curated default ESPR Article 9 access tier.

These fields mint nothing of their own. 135 of the 139 are a GS1 Web Vocabulary property under the identical local name, so the GS1 IRI is the term and the only thing OpenEPCIS contributes is the access tier. The 4 marked close are flattened plurals or resolver-specific field shapes with no identically named GS1 property, mapped to their nearest GS1 term. Tiers are overridable defaults — a deployment may tighten them, never loosen them.

How it is vendored and used

  • Pinned snapshot. A copy of the GS1 Web Vocabulary is vendored so the CLI, tooling, and browser demos resolve offline and deterministically. It is upstream data; we do not edit it.
  • Bare-term aliases. A generated shortcut layer defines a bare alias (gtin → gs1:gtin, …) for every GS1 class and property. Only the operational contexts include this layer, so the compressed EN 18223 §5.2 form keys GS1 terms by their bare names.
  • Vocabulary mapping. Which DPP concepts reuse GS1 terms versus which are OpenEPCIS-defined is documented in the DPP documentation .
